On 29 March 2011, Glenn Doswell (aged 45): father, husband, and friend to many tragically lost his battle with cancer.
However we are determined to see Glenn’s legacy live on.
Through his wonderfully loving and supportive family, wife Lou and their children Oliver and Lucy, together with his loyal and passionate friends, the Love Courage Hope (LCH) Foundation was formed.
Since then, LCH has raised vital funds for research and prevention into cancer and commenced a carers support project developed in conjunction with the Olivia Newton-John Wellness Centre at the Austin Hospital. From 2015 our focus is to directly support carers in the community as they travel their journey.
Glenn’s courageous journey, since his diagnosis with metastatic colorectal cancer in 2009, is the inspiration behind this Foundation. Being deeply loved by someone gives you strength, while loving someone deeply gives you courage. These words epitomise Glenn and will continue to inspire the Foundation. Glenn’s life, his fight and his inspiration, was not in vain, but will now help light up an otherwise poorly lit path, too often travelled by cancer patients and their loved ones.
Through the work of the Love Courage Hope Foundation, and the money it raises, we have the opportunity to make a real difference to the lives of individuals and their friends and families affected by cancer.
Our current focus – the LCH Community Support Service
The LCH Community Support Service focusses on directly supporting carers through a program of financial help administered directly by LCH. The program will provide personalised and practical support to give hope and a little ease to carers as they travel their journey.
LCH recognises the role of the carer in a cancer patient’s journey, whether they are a spouse, child, other family member or a professional carer. The burden – physical, emotional, financial – borne by carers can be immense and have a dramatic effect on their life. However, this is often overlooked as the priorities of the patient come first.
How we support carers
LCH will fund and organise customised support based on the needs of the carer. Examples of this are:
- assistance with accommodation and travel costs
- a special night out/weekend away
- pamper packs
- home cleaning
- in home support
- child care
- gardening and household chores
Support services can be tailored after discussion with the carer. All services will be supplied by professional service providers.
A brochure outlining the services LCH can offer carers will be supplied to schools, hospitals, doctors and other groups in our community in coming months. We would encourage you to make the LCH Community Support Service known to anyone you know who may benefit from this support.
